AI vs Human: Which Actually Creates Better Content?

I've tested both extensively. Here's the uncomfortable truth: for a lot of content, most readers can't tell the difference — and for the content that matters most, they absolutely can.
The blind test
I sent 240 readers six short articles. Three written by me, three by AI with a light edit. They guessed the author correctly 54% of the time. Basically a coin flip.
Then I ran it again with personal-story pieces. Accuracy jumped to 81%. People spot missing lived experience quickly, even when they can't explain how.
Engagement numbers
| Content type | Avg. time on page | Comments per 1k reads |
|---|---|---|
| AI draft, light edit | 1m 42s | 1.2 |
| AI draft, heavy human rewrite | 3m 05s | 4.8 |
| Fully human, first-person | 3m 51s | 7.3 |
Where AI genuinely wins
- Structure and outlines — it never stares at a blank page
- Product descriptions and documentation at volume
- Summarising research you'd otherwise skim for an hour
- Second drafts, when you give it your own voice to match
Where humans still win, easily
- Anything that requires having been there
- Opinions with something at stake
- Humour that lands rather than announces itself
- Knowing which detail to leave out
My conclusion
The best content I published this year was AI-assisted and human-owned. I outline with AI, write the first-person parts myself, and use AI again as an editor. Roughly 60% faster, and it still sounds like me.
AI is a great intern with perfect recall and zero taste. You still have to be the one with taste.
Where do you draw the line in your own work? I'd genuinely like to know if you'd publish something you didn't write a word of.
